Being Taught By The Trip To Antarctica

After 18 days in icy Antarctica, the on time arrival at the airport must have seemed an especially warm homecoming. After nearly three weeks journeying the bottom of the world, four members of the expedition to Antarctica was home for a hero’s welcome. This could be a wonderful event that marked the history of us all. You will find that further information on antarctica travel adventures is on that site.

A welcome party was set when the arrival day of the scientific expedition in Antarctica finally came after the unwanted weather restricted them for about 10 additional days. Immediate family members and friends sat on the black plastic airport chairs peering out the large windows on the landing field and glancing at their watches about an hour before the airplane had reached its destination. Along the hallway, 25 students draw together with instructors and parents, eating turkey sandwiches and were about to coddle their instructors with hugs.

In order to surprise them, welcome troops brought along balloons with a heart shape, lots of roses and of course, a streamer as a sign with images of penguins on it. The four team members brought two backpacks of meteorites which will be taken photographs, cut open and experimented and shared tales about their accomplished mission. The Antarctic journey also included two astronauts who worked at NASA before, a NASA scientist and a Chicago resident who contributed significantly in funding part of the expedition. The mission draws the group to the Patriot Hills of Antarctica, South Pole and Thiel Mountains even if it isn’t as high as the Rockies, but just as stunning.

For the technology that was taken during the trip there was a complaint from a team member back in the States. Inadequate were the satellite phones. They make you remember too much what you left behind. For him, the return that awaits him is his life in a populated continent as a professor of astronomy and geology. Unfamiliar territories have been explored by these people in their other past adventures. Together with their scientific team in Turkey last summer two of them saw the solar eclipse from the coast of the Black Sea. The same thing happened over there like the unexpected extra days they had when they were in Antarctica. For the solar eclipse was why they went there but they stayed for an intense earthquake as well. About 5.5 was the magnitude of the earthquake the two felt for they were 200 miles away from its epicenter when it struck.

When it comes to the Antarctica trip he liked the camaraderie best but he also considered this to be a less stressful trip with its blue ice fields not to mention the snow covered scenery. For the team which had a retired NASA scientist it was somewhat an exclusive club. Aside from being easy to approach this group was actually down to earth. They favored fun over egos. From talking to reading to cross country skiing to snowmobiling, they did everything for their days, unanticipated or not, in Antarctica.

Completing the outfit a 24 year old member shared with reporters and staff members for the trip which consisted of boots, heavy gloves, and goggles was an energetic smile. Back home she wore jeans and sneakers and a sweatshirt plus her cheerful smile. The trip to the Mars like continent was made possible because of her interest in space science. Students had an incredible opportunity as well. For learning to happen, everything should be tied in. To have a teacher being an explorer, the kids are living science and living history.

The main focus of her experimentations was temperature, rocks, and gravity, similar to the students’ focus back home. Used to transmit the information to 11 classrooms were satellite phone and email as well. Amusing were the questions raised as well as the answers provided. What was funny was how the answers were so different. Being in a snowy desert with temperatures almost below zero can affect results and this was what the students learned from her experience.
